Day 1: The Rich Fool – Part 1

Luke 12:16-21

16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully.17 And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’18 So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods.19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.”20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’21 “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
NKJV

Jesus’s story in the book of Luke 12:16-21 perfectly sums up The Mystery Of The Rich Fool. The scripture reads:

16 “…The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17 And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ 18 So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ 21 “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

My early life in a solely agrarian township and numerous experiences over the years have taught me that getting a great harvest in any sphere of life requires timely planting of good seeds, adequate watering, and weeding. The man in the Bible passage above must have been a visionary. He could not have been a lazy guy and through great foresight, he must have put in a lot of hard work.

This story still baffles a lot of people today and raises unanswered questions, since we know that success comes through smartness, hard work and favor. Take a look at this man. The Bible says his ground “yielded plentifully”, however, at the peak of his prosperity, God abruptly cut his life short and was not allowed to enjoy the fruit of his labor- not even for one day!

This is serious food for thought and it is something we should ponder upon before moving on to the next day where we take an in-depth look at what this scripture means and its implications. We can see0 that there is more to just putting in hard work and getting success. Furthermore, the bible emphasizes “good success”, which is what we should strive towards as Christians

Our God is a God of multiplication. He hardly increases by addition but by multiplication and most times, he does that in geometric progression.
